Fate Catches up with Canada’s Big Apple: Doing what comes naturally to Frankenstein
by Kevin D. Annett
The colonized man is a patchwork fabrication of a foreign power. The more he takes on the mantle of his conquerors, the more he learns to hate himself and project that loathing on to his own people. – Frantz Fanon
I first heard the name that makes many west coast Indians run for cover when a very large man threw me against a wall. Grabbing me by the throat, the ruffian bellowed in my face,
“Eddie John’s pissed off with what you’re doing here and he says if you don’t cut out this shit you’re gonna be dead!”
My assaulter was Dean Wilson, an enforcer with the Carrier-Sekani Tribal Council in Prince George, British Columbia. His assault on me occurred in Vancouver on June 12, 1998, during the opening session of the only independent Tribunal ever conducted into Canadian Indian residential schools.
Like his boss, Dean was a feared man at our Tribunal that weekend. Aboriginal men and women would scurry away whenever he entered the hall, even as some of them struggled to speak about what they’d endured in the Christian death camps. Nobody dared to ask Dean Wilson to leave.
“That’s one of Ed John’s goons” said a native man to me nervously.
“Who’s Ed John?” I replied, more than annoyed.
The guy shook his head and muttered,
“You don’t want to know”
Well, the man who threatened me with death that day was publicly accused of a crime this past week. “Grand Chief” Ed John has been charged with four counts of “having sexual intercourse with a female without her consent”: that’s our sanitized Canadian way of saying he raped someone. His trial opens in Prince George on December 10.
I have to admit that when I read the news account of the rape charge against Mr. John brought by a single accuser, my first thought was, “Only one?”.
For those of you who haven’t had your eyes opened at the receiving end of Dean Wilson’s mitts, Ed John isn’t just your average government puppet chief. He’s one of the richest Indians in Canada, a former BC cabinet minister and Canadian government delegate to the United Nations. In return for lots of paybacks, he’s personally brokered the selling off of vast tracts of his Carrier-Sekani peoples’ lands in northern BC to multinational companies. And according to at least five separate native eyewitnesses, he’s got blood on his hands.
“Eddie John’s knocked off lots of people to get their trap lines and mineral rights” said Helen Michel, a Carrier woman and one of the witnesses, during a closed recorded session of our 1998 Tribunal.
“He’s got his own private goon squad that gets rid of people. He had my cousin killed to get his land. Eddie signed away all our water to Alcan and anyone on the tribal council who objected got a one way trip to the lake.”
Her partner Frank Martin added,
“Eddie’s the big power up north and he keeps everybody in line by grabbing their kids. He runs all of the drugs and the child trafficking around Prince George with some of the Mounties and local judges. The feds look the other way ‘cause he plays their game. That’s his payoff.”
All of this is sacrilege to the Canadian media and government, who have adulated and protected Ed John for years. He’s the Indian politician always quoted in the press, including at the “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” (TRC) fiasco where his crocodile tears were caught live on television as proof that aboriginal people “finally forgive” Christian Canada for doing to Indian kids what Ed apparently does all the time.
When it comes to its abo-accomplices, White Canada protects its own. Anyone who’s ever spoken out publicly against Ed John has either disappeared or found themselves at the receiving end of government-funded lawsuits and gag orders, like BC Premier Ujjal Dosanjh arranged for Ed at taxpayer’s expense in July of 2002. Anyone who criticized Dosanjh’s appointment of Ed John – an accused child trafficker – to the post of provincial Minister of Children and Families (!) received a personal reply from the Premier threatening litigation. Seriously.
And so it might seem odd at first blush for these sudden charges to be brought against Ed John, along with the willingness of BC’s Attorney General to allow the trial against him to proceed. In reality, the whole thing smells of containment. Only one woman is accusing him of rape, based on an incident forty five years ago. But Eddie John Boy has been doing that and much worse a lot more recently than 1974, according to more eyewitnesses.
Ask Les Guerin. He’s the former maintenance man at the Musqueam Indian reserve in south Vancouver that’s home for Ed John and his lovely wife Wendy Grant-John, another government insider. According to Les and the sworn affidavit of another man named Jim Kew, Ed John participated in the group rape of a disabled man in a private Musqueam home in the fall of 2004.
“It’s how they keep everybody in line, it’s the violence, it never stops” Les said to me.
“Ed and Wendy have driven lots of families off the reserve to grab their homes. They run the Celtic Shipyards that brings in guns and drugs and little kids from overseas. Shit, they even use Musqueam as a body dumping site. Eddie hired Willie’s brother Dave Pickton in 1999 and the guy was bringing bags of soil out here, I saw him. Later we had some of the buried stuff analyzed at SFU and sure enough it was female and pig bones mixed together. But the cops wouldn’t touch it. Eddie’s too well protected.”
Gangsterism by reservation “chiefs” isn’t exactly a novelty in Canada. Drug dealing, child trafficking, rampant corruption and nepotism is the order of the day on virtually every reserve. It’s how the Indian Act system was set up, to keep the remnant indigenous populaces disabled and fighting each other. It’s called neo-colonialism.
Like any third world dictator, reservation chiefs in Canada manage and soak and even eliminate their own people at the behest and in the pay of big money and government. And Eddie John is on the top of that whole bloody arrangement: a fact that makes his public exoneration probably inevitable. And so it’s no accident that the total legal case against him now consists of a single accuser popping up more than four decades after the fact. Like with the Great TRC Cover Up, you can be assured that there’ll be no mention of dead people allowed in the course of the Ed John trial.
That said, the guy is nothing if not a pitiable figure. Ed John is really a Frankenstein run amok, a patch-work creation of Empire manufactured in “residential school” that needs reining in now and then.
Try as he might to please his masters, and as important as he remains to Corporate Canada’s agenda of a dispossessed and landless native population, like any artificial being, Ed John is expendable, and he knows it. After all, there’s always a host of other prefabricated brown sellouts ready and willing to complete the extermination of the few actual indigenous people still on their land, to secure the west coast water and minerals for the highest bidder. Nowadays, that means China. And so it’s more than significant that the Ed John trial is happening in Prince George, in the backyard of the mushrooming Chinese Liquid Natural Gas empire that’s responsible for driving native families and legions of missing women off their lands and into oblivion.
At the end of the day, with or without Ed John, it will still be business as usual in the Great White North, with the convenient added touch of a “Red Washed” Ab-Original face lift on our homegrown, corporate-led genocide.
As for those of you who are worried that this article may cause Dean Wilson to do a repeat performance on my throat, or that I’ll be clapped in jail, or worse, I wouldn’t fret. The gangster regime called Canada that hatched slime-bucket robots like Ed John doesn’t like drawing attention to its own filth. It prefers a neat, managed court verdict that exonerates their flunkies or gives them a mild wrist slap. That way, all the other fabricated Canadians can keep voting and paying their taxes and feeding their masters, here in what the BC government still calls “The Best Place on Earth”.
The best place, indeed: especially for a Frankenstein.
Note: A complete dossier of the evidence against Ed John and his accomplices will be published soon for the public and the courts, including at www.murderbydecree.com under ITCCS Updates.
